There are certain questions that always come to our minds during the month of May. And these questions aren’t usually just about our plans for the summer vacations, well they are but that’s not the enquiry I was referring to. I was addressing  to the questions that float in our conscious, when we read about the infamous Cannes and the glamour the international presses assign to it.

Question related to its significance, and why exactly is it such a big deal? What is it? Is it an award function? And most importantly how do you pronounce “ Cannes” ?

The Cannes Film Festival or the  Festival de Cannes is an annual film festival held in Cannes, France, which previews new films of all genres, including documentaries, from around the world. It’s a platform for exhibition of films and documentaries by directors, actors and auteur  who seek recognition and visibility on the international forum. It is one of the most prestige’s  film festival in the world.

Aside from its cinematic significance, the festival is known for its elegant red carpet setting, star-studded parties on La Croisette, and all-around glamour. You will often read about big celebrities who make their appearance and their couture wear ,about which international media keeps on buzzing in various style and fashion segments. Oh and yeah the films are also mentioned. While it’s primarily a film festival , it does award certain prize for excellent performance and recognition of heartfelt work. Amongst all these The Palme d’Or is the grand prize of the festival. It is given to the director of the best feature film in the official competition every year. Past winners include Terrence Malick for The Tree of Life and Quentin Tarantino for Pulp Fiction. And  lastly it’s pronounced as “Kan” or can, as in a can of beer.

From its modest beginnings in the ’40s, the Cannes Film Festival has become synonymous with granting movies global recognition. Each year juries assembled from the industry elite award a handful of prestigious prizes to the very best films entered into their coveted array of categories

This year was no exception. While the 69th annual  film festival was studded with glamour and shine , it in most elementary terms it was about the films. So while it was a parade of celebrities, it was also an important event for the film lovers. As many of  the awaited films were showcased. The ones to watch out for  include:

The Neon Demon
Hands of Stone
The Unknown Girl
Toni Erdmann
American Honey
Personal Shopper
The Salesman
From the Land of the Moon

The 2016  Cannes Film festival was also  ripe  with controversy and criticism. With Woody Allen being in the centre of it both. The allegation of him sexually assaulting his seven year old adoptive daughter came into limelight again after   Laurent Lafitte, this year’s master of ceremonies, made this joke about the director: “It’s very nice that you’ve been shooting so many movies in Europe, even if you are not being convicted for rape in the U.S.”.Along with this, his film actress Kristin Stewart was  boo-ed  for one of her films ,after its premier.

Celebrities dazzled in their gowns and suits. Trends were both made and broken. It was a busy week for the fashion bloggers.Often the red carpet of the festival is the stage of new trend makers and style statements. One of them being Aishwariya Rai Bacchan’s infamous purple lipstick. Bella Hadid’s bold gown and bangs. And Julie Roberts abandoning of  her heels after walking the red carpet.
