Zomato presents FestOComm 2017- the annual flagship event of Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication ends on a high note Lavale, Pune – February 20, 2017: Symbiosis Institute of Media & Communication, PG, Pune conducted its annual flagship event Fest-O- Comm 2017, presented by Zomato. The academic, cultural and sports extravaganza was held on the 18th and 19th of February, 2017. It was a two-day celebration that revolved around the theme, ‘Where Parallels Collide’. Every year, Fest-O-Comm brings students from over 100 colleges nationwide and has witnessed a footfall of over 4000 students over the years.
With a plethora of events, ranging from case study competitions to entertainment quizzes, under its banner, SIMC’s flagship event – Zomato presents FestOComm, ended on a high note. This year’s theme – ‘Where Parallels Collide’ was understood as an amalgamation of seemingly contradictory forces – creativity and logic, the left brain and the right brain – and how they help in making sense of the world when combined.
The first day witnessed some academic, cultural and sports events attended by eminent personalities including renowned comedian Daniel Fernandes, among others. Academic events included a case study competition. As regards the cultural competitions, the event witnessed a street play competition titled Tamasha, a 24-hour filmmaking challenge, and ultimately a group dance competition – all having invited the participation of various educational institutions. Sports enthusiasts were not left behind, with a box-cricket league keeping up the excitement on the field. Sparsh, a leading rock band from Mumbai, enthralled the audience with their lively tunes on the final night. The fest was inaugurated by the director, Dr Ruchi Jaggi and began with the head of the Co-Curricular Cell, Swarna Rajesh, addressing the audience, saying how much this event has taught her.
Amongst the varied guests who graced the occasion was SIMC’s alumnus, Daniel Fernandes, who spoke about his experience in the institution and his life as a comedian. The Just A Minute (JAM) session which took place later in the day, had up to 14 participants from various disciplines. They had to speak on topics ranging from; I may not be Fred Flinstone, but I can make your bedrock to Is Harambe secretly alive?;. The final round of the session had the topic
‘Omkar’s Mum’ where the participants had to sing two songs relating to the topic. Box Cricket saw 12 teams participate, where the teams played to the best of their abilities. The final match of the league was held on the second day, with Sinhagad Strikers notching up a convincing victory.
Laasya, a group dance competition hosted by SIMChoreo, the official dance team of SIMC, saw four teams are competing against each other. The jury panel included Sahil Adaniya and Shruti Sinha, both of whom have been a part of Dance India Dance, a leading TV show dedicated to dancers. The team from JSPM College emerged victoriously and took the trophy home. The evening was concluded with an inspiring performance by SIMC’s very own dance team, SIMChoreo. The second day kicked off with a case study competition, where the participants had to develop the best solution to a marketing case study provided to them. Judges were happy with the presentations and asked participants to explore the digital media by not only limiting themselves to social media.
Tamasha, the street play competition provided a platform for aspiring actors and directors to show off their talents. The winning team was from ACDT college, which enacted a play on the disadvantages of privatisation of education in India. The 24-hour filmmaking challenge, which is a flagship event of SIMC, required the participants
to come up with an idea for a short film under the given theme, and shoot it within 24 hours. The theme for this year was “An ending with a twist”.The winners were a team named ‘Filmoholics’ from SIMC. The Entertainment Quiz widely covered questions on Hollywood, Bollywood, music and popular TV series. The event saw a huge turnout with many on-the- spot registrations. The final round
had the six qualified teams go through a more detailed Q& amp;A session with questions on topics ranging from Neel Kamal and Gone With The Wind to the famous Game of Thrones. Skaria Parakal and Krishna Chand from Symbiosis Institute of Business Management won the quiz. The Amazing Race was a team event with five teams in total. They were made to go around the campus to hunt for clues which also included tasks and challenges. These ranged from making
paper planes to doing sit-ups.SIMC FEST_O _Comm
Fest-O- Comm 2017 came to an end with the music festival, Consonance. SIMC’s Music Circle opened for the Hindi rock band Sparsh. The Music Circle sang a few popular Bollywood numbers and english songs too. Sparsh played their original songs – including the popular Ab Japan Jaa and Samandar – as well covers.
