‘They POSTED Madhuri on the ONLINE classified and then, the phone NEVER stopped ringing.’

In about 25 minutes, at least 32 men poured in their calls. No, it wasn’t a matrimonial ad, it was a prostitution classified. Oh, you already have frowns on your forehead don’t you? And sure, you’re open mouthed; WHY should we TALK about prostitutes? They choose to be so, right?

As a society, we have a weird relationship with prostitutes. There’s a massive demand for what they DO yet we tend to treat them LIKE vermin. That’s odd, keeping in mind that if there is ever a victim in the whole scenario, it’s the prostitutes themselves – NO, prostitution is not a VICTIMLESS crime. Prostitutes are NOT born that way, yes they are victims; victims of poverty, human trafficking and betrayal.

Madhuri got into sex work for the SAME reason WHY many people settle for a McJob: she had lost her old job and in due course, she headed for ‘that’ part of town and waited. Later that night, she had her first client. A tall, charming and well-built man. She was clueless about how much to ask for and therefore she just said Rs 500. He obviously agreed on it. That night, Madhuri earned Rs 2000. She knew she was on the WRONG track but well, ALL of us need 3 square meals don’t we?

A few months down the LINE, she admitted that she had been threatened with weapons numerous times. Not JUST this, she was also PHYSICALLY assaulted and few other women of her trade; MURDERED. She wanted to switch back and lead a mainstream LIFE but sadly, prostitution had seeped in deep into her soul. She applied for numerous jobs but she was so DIFFIDENT that she couldn’t clear even ONE SINGLE interview. She NEEDED money and thereby convinced herself that she ENJOYS her job.

Prostitution Society’s VERMIN

Oh yeah, CHARECTERLESS? She ENJOYED her job not because of physical satisfaction but because she could get her sick husband treated. Her husband who had Alzheimer’s and also because her kids now went to school. There’s this belief that sex workers really love sex. But it’s not sex, it is work. After seeing a client, a prostitute wouldn’t feel like ‘I just got laid.’ It’d actually make her want to be with her partner more, because she’d know what she has with him is REAL.

We’re ALL grossed by the term PROSTITUTE but who’s the bad guy there? The client, for being unfaithful to his WIFE? OR the society, for stigmatizing an individual’s urges to the point that he has to break the law to satisfy them?

Society tends to blame the sex worker, but why, we know NOT. I think it would be right to say that prostitution runs on the same unspoken rule as any other business: The Customer Is Always Right.
