downloadKeshav Baliram Hedgewar was an indian nationalist who was born on 1 april, 1889 in Nagpur. He fought for the freedom of the country against the British occupation. When he was a student, he was rusticated for singing ‘vande matram’ which was against the rules of the british government. This was a turning point in his life he pledged to end the british rule in the country. In Nagpur, Hedgewar became involved with social work and also with the Bal Gangadhar Tilak faction of the Congress Party, through which he developed a close association with Dr. Moonje who later became his mentor.

He was the founding member of the Right-wing nationalist organization know as the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh. He was influenced by social and spiritual indians like swami vivekanand, sri aurobindo and Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. He drew upon influences from them tp develop the core philosophy of the R.S.S. He fought for the freedom of the country against the British occupation. After independence , he devoted himself to the work of socio-cultural awakening of Indians. His organizing ability was legendary. His vision and foresight was very commendable.

Hedgewar went on cogently putting forth the policy of the RSS before all: “Sangh is away from politics. Our organization is not against anybody. Without animosity to any one, the Sangh is striving to make the Indian society strong and united.” RSS states that its ideology is based on the principle of selfless service to the nation. Its volunteers are also known for their efforts in relief and rehabilitation work during natural calamities and for helping with more than 100,000 charities and educational/service programmes in the fields of education, health care, rural, development, tribal emancipation, village self-sufficiency, rural farming and the rehabilitation of lepers and special needs children. R.S.S took part in the first republic day parade. After the assasination of Mahatma Gandhi R.S.S was banned but later it was found that R.S.S was not behind the assassination of mahatma gandhi. It was acquited by Justice kapoor commission. Nowadays people have a misconception about the R.S.S and they blame it to be a communal organisation. But in reality R.S.S is a nationalist organisation which works for the unity of Indians.

R.S.S prayer : “Om namastey sada vatsalay, matrabhoome”

English translation of the first para :- ” Forever I bow to thee, O Loving Motherland! O Motherland of us Hindus (indians living on the banks of the river sindhu), Thou hast brought me up in happiness. May my life, O great and blessed Holy Land, be laid down in Thy Cause. I bow to Thee again and again.” Bharat mata ki jai Vandr matram
