To be ‘iconic’, seems like a great effort. The word itself has more weight than can be handled by the ordinary me and you. I mean, I can barely get out of bed in the morning without snoozing my alarm several times, how in the world will I be iconic? Plus, only the over-achieved are icons, right? Wrong.

1 iconic

In the twisted sense of today’s world, only the rich and famous are iconic. But I have recently come to realize that I don’t need the world to know me or be popular to be iconic. Nor do you. You could be shining brighter than any star out there, and you wouldn’t even know it. I believe, that you don’t have to be an icon to be shining. Everybody is somebody’s icon, even the big bad mafia lords. The trick, is to bedazzle. Being iconic doesn’t require much work, but being iconically bedazzling isn’t as easy as it seems. Everybody is trying to be somebody they are not, and amidst this, just being you will prove to be the most challenged of all tasks.

Having a man open the door or pull out a chair for a lady, that’s an iconic gesture. Keeping promises and being truthful, that’s iconic. Not cheating on life, that’s iconic. Not treating those poorer than self as malicious diseases, that’s iconic. Donating blood, that’s iconic. But living a life being truly yourself, iconically bedazzling.

It’s not the grand gestures, the fame and riches and the leadership qualities… It’s having the strength to stand up to what you believe in and not being afraid to admit so. It’s not being afraid of yourself. Of being you. You ARE iconic. Maybe not to a thousand people, but to at least one. Now, be bedazzling. Don’t get so lost in the shadows of others that you lose your shine. In Colbie Caillat’s simple lyrics:

2 iconic

It’s not easy; playing your own game. To know that one small mistake, and it’ll be ALL your fault, and yet, still decide to play the game. To ‘make one heap of all your winnings, and risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss’. THAT, will have you bedazzling the world. Iconically bedazzling.

It was once said, “Every person is in some respect like all other persons, like some other persons, like none other persons.” And yet, in all of this confusion, don’t forget to be your own person.

Maybe the journey isn’t about becoming anything. Maybe it’s about un-becoming everything that isn’t really you so you could be who were meant to be in the first place.

Because YOU, are it all.
